Perhaps the most well-known among Newark's war heroes of all time, Liberty Pete got plenty of ink from the local press. I was privileged to be among those who contributed to his fame. Here's a clipping from 1964 celebrating 50 years of his residency in Newark. There were lots of news articles about him before that, as you can see by the old Advocate photo, and many more would follow. Pete Androutsos died in April, 1984, and is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery. He perhaps paid more for his freedom than anybody I know, so here - at The Newark Ohio Tea Party - is a good place to archive his story, that we can remember the price of freedom and be inspired by how it was paid by Liberty Pete. |
